Impact of Digital Texts on Thinking, Learning, and Reading

Any significant change in society or education surfaces the question, “What will the impact be on our   learning and thinking?”. Nicholas Carr’s, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains? 2011, exemplifies this.  Much of the literature focused on the potential harms and rewiring of our brains and the negative impact on student learning. Much also focuses on skimming the internet not deep reading of texts. These articles provide overviews of the issue. Read with a critical eye considering,

·         Is it research or analysis backed by research?

·         If it is research, what were the conditions: setting, number of participants, evaluation etc.)

·         What does it tell us?

·         What doesn’t it tell us?

·         What do we still need to know?

·         How does this apply in my setting?
