Course Glossary

  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) - The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) replaced No Child Left Behind (NCLB) on December 10, 2015. It is the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). ESSA became fully operational in school year 2017–18. 

  • Washington State Report Card - the primary place where OSPI reports data in the most parent friendly format.  This includes information from student enrollment, test results, teacher demographics, and financial data. 

  • Summary PDF – A PDF infographic that auto-populates with data from the organization’s Report Card data, which can easily be printed out or embedded in other websites 

  • Diversity Report - Tab at the top of the Washington State Report Card that includes student demographics, characteristics, and program enrollment. 

  • Topics - Top level data organization, houses measures and measure breakdowns. 

  • Measures - Mid level data organization, gets viewer into see data for measure breakdowns. 

  • Measure Breakdowns - Most granular data organization, such as summary data, trend, and other detailed displays. 

  • Data Portal - Web page with all Washington State Report Card data sets, as well as other data published by OSPI. 

  • Tool Tip – A pop up box that appears on Tableau visualizations on the Report Card and in workbooks that gives additional information about the data when hovering over. 

  • Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF) Released in March 2018, and last updated in February of 2020, the Washington School Improvement Framework identifies how schools can improve the education of all students. The Framework combines as many as nine indicators (such as graduation rates, attendance, and proficiency on state tests in math and English language arts) into a 1-10 score. The school's score then determines the state supports for the school to improve. 

  • Tableau – Data visualization software that creates charts, graphs, lists and timelines to allow data to be seen, manipulated, and understood in different ways.  

  • Tableau Server – Website hosted on EDS, that houses Tableau displays for school/district/ESD data stakeholders to review and download their data. 

  • Secure Data Portal – Portion of the Tableau Server that houses student level data – this is where stakeholders can only see their data to ensure student privacy.  

  • Comprehensive Education Data and Research System (CEDARS) - The Comprehensive Education Data and Research System (CEDARS) is a longitudinal data warehouse of educational data. Districts report data on courses, students, and teachers. Course data includes standardized state course codes. Student data includes demographics, enrollment information, schedules, grades, and program participation. Teacher data includes demographics, certifications, and schedules. 

  • Reporting Tool – A data output system that reflects the raw data going into it.  These data can not be changed from a reporting tool, rather must be changed from the base data system producing the information. 

  • Raw data Raw data is unprocessed computer data. Because it has not been processed by the computer in any way, it is "raw data." 

  • Education Data System (EDS) - A centralized suite of web-based applications regarding educational data. It is used by: state agencies, educational service districts (ESDs), school districts, schools, teachers, teaching certificate applicants, non-profit organizations and businesses for a variety of purposes related to education in the State of Washington. This system is administered by data security managers for each organization and maintained by OSPI. 

  • District Data Security Manager (DDSM) All Local Education Agencies and ESDs are required to officially identify to OSPI at least one individual within that district assigned to be the DDSM for that organization. 

  • User Role – Tableau Server permission level. Educator Interactor: Educator Equity Data Collection Tool and other Teach/Staff systems. Finance Interactor: School financial information, including but not limited to SAFS. Student Interactor: Reports focused around CEDARS and its related sub-systems. 

  • Project – Highest level of the server hierarchical structure. The Secure Data Portal is a Project. 

  • Subproject – Nested within a project. Educator, Finance, and Student are subprojects. 

  • Workbook – Data tools comprised of one or more views. 

  • Views – Views are where users can view and interact with the data visualizations.
